| While the fashion for Keep Calm and Carry On posters started in Britain, the posters are definitely becoming stylish in the USA too! There is a wave of Anglomania afoot. Marie Claire, Vanity Fair and The New York Times have all covered the Keep Calm phenomenon in one way or another. Aside from other more scholarly coverage, The New York Times said Barney's shoe department on a busy day needed a Keep Calm and Carry On poster. One of our favorite British celebrity magazines is OK! Magazine. It's delicious gossipy fun. Recently OK! Magazine featured the Keep Calm and Carry On poster under the heading, "This week we're loving..." and called the Keep Calm and Carry On poster "the latest celebrity must have!" Here's what they said: | |
"From the streets of wartime London to the walls of Tyra Banks' NYC offices, a poster reading "Keep Calm and Carry On"(the British government's 1939 phrase to soothe Londoners anxious about the war with Germany) is the latest celebrity must-have. In April, Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott bought a framed copy of the classic print." Now it's your turn. Our Keep Calm and Carry On posters are hand screened in Great Britain and imported to our warehouse. They hand screened print reproductions of the vintage Keep Calm and Carry On posters that the British Ministry of Information designed in 1939. The Ministry printed the posters to calm the fears of a populace on the eve of war with Germany. For no known reason, the poster never had occasion to be released during WWII, and the Keep Calm and Carry On poster was only rediscovered at the turn of the millennium by a British bookseller. But once he began selling them, the words Keep Calm and Carry On, in their classic sans-serif type font, under the King's crown motif quickly became a British design icon. In fact, today the Keep Calm and Carry On print is approaching the ubiquity of the Union Jack in England. Keep Calm and Carry On USA, in collaboration with its parent site, www.DecorativeThings.com, is delighted to have the largest selection of Keep Calm and Carry On merchandise in the U.S.A. More about the history of Keep Calm and Carry On You can find a copy of the original Keep Calm and Carry On poster in the British War Museum in London. The museum was established in 1917 and was open sporadically until 1936 when The Duke of York, soon to become King George VI, whose crown sits atop the Keep Calm and Carry On poster, reopened the museum in its present home which is located beneath the Treasury building in the Whitehall area of Westminster. The section of the museum open to the public is only a portion of a facility that originally covered three acres and housed a staff of 528 people. The facilities even included a shooting range. They became operational in 1939 and were closed in 1945 after Japan surrendered. Churchill held his War Cabinet Meetings there and there was a Map Room which was used to direct the war. He also had a bedroom there but is said to only have slept there three times. In fact, it is said that Churchill felt trapped in the bunker and preferred to be over at 10 Downing up on the roof to watch the bombing. According to the BBC, Churchill was dismayed when he learned that the War Rooms were not bomb-proof but refused to leave London. Churchill's rooms were only 10 feet deep compared to Hitler's which were 33 feet. When a bomb struck the Treasury and damaged the kitchen at 10 Downing Street, Churchill had the rooms strengthened with a concrete slab. Many of the War Room veterans did not know that the rooms were not bomb-proof but others who knew said it "never occurred to me that the building could come down on top of us while we were in the war rooms thinking about the bombing and the buzz bombs and so on, I always felt completely safe." The British had an uncanny abilty to keep calm and carry on during WWII. Keep Calm and Carry On Resources: Read more about The History of Keep Calm and Carry On on Wikipedia.
